Description: Given unprecedented levels of mental health needs in America, this course seeks to highlight, from a public health perspective, the sociocultural, behavioral, and biological context of mental health disorders and mental well-being. The course will provide an overview of common mental health disorders’ epidemiology, social determinants of health, health and societal consequences, and public health approaches for their prevention. Discussed mental health topics include mood disorders, psychotic disorders, personality disorders, and substance use disorders. Coursework will consist of class discussions, readings, lectures, and an experiential learning project where students consider why a mental health problem of interest exists and its population health impact and envision solutions to address the issue.

Description: This interdisciplinary course reviews public health topics characterizing the economic, social, physical, and built environment aspects of environmental health. This course explores the conceptualization of a healthy environment as a determinant of health from the individual to the community to the population levels. The course will focus heavily on the science behind public health efforts to mitigate environmental threats to population health in the Greater Houston area and Texas, including climate change, air quality, flooding and water quality resources, and natural disasters. Students will critically appraise how environmental health issues may directly impact their health. Students will practically apply public health concepts to advocate for environmental health improvement at Rice and beyond.
