Description: Who and what defines value in the art world? Is it the artist? The buyer? The auction house? And how are digital technologies influencing the way art is produced and perceived? In this course we will find some answers to these questions by looking at the intersection of the art and the professional worlds. Over the course of the semester, we will explore different angles through collaborative seminars, field trips to museums and galleries in Houston as well as guest lectures by successful international professionals from the art world and beyond.

Description: This research-based course is conducted in partnership with cultural heritage institutions in Houston. Qualified and advanced students work 10 hours/week on site with curators, artists, archivists, center directors, and others to develop projects in specific research areas. Students meet regularly with instructor to discuss research and to present work at an end of semester symposium. Formerly offered as HURC 423. If HURC 423 was taken previously, the total number of repetitions is four, whether taken as HURC 423 or MUCH 423. Instructor Permission Required. Repeatable for Credit.

Description: This course prepares students to complete the Museums and Cultural Heritage Minor program. We spend the term reflecting on what was learned and achieved, within the wider context of the goals of Museums Studies and Cultural Heritage disciplines. Assessments include discussions on themes related to student projects in museums and heritage. Preparation for the final symposium involves coaching for the writing of abstracts as well as presentation design and delivery. Finally, students present at the concluding Capstone Symposium. Instructor Permission Required.
