The Master of Energy Transition and Sustainability (METS) degree program is a professional non-thesis master's degree designed in partnership with the George R. Brown School of Engineering and Computing and the Wiess School of Natural Sciences at Rice University. The METS program empowers individuals with the knowledge and expertise required to spearhead the global energy transition. This joint degree program requires 31 credit hours of curated courses at the 500-level or above, including a culminating three-credit hour capstone course.

The METS program is tailored for individuals holding a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in a quantitative major (engineering or science) from an accredited institution. The degree will also be of value to professionals currently in the traditional energy field to allow them to retool their skills to join the global workforce in the areas of the Energy Transition, ideally those with a science or engineering background.

Students select an Area of Specialization, choosing Engineering or Geoscience, designed to guide their choice of elective courses to complete the degree. However, students are encouraged to consider any of the listed elective courses in either of the areas and can propose alternative elective courses to the program advisers.

As a global energy hub, Houston plays a significant role in shaping the future of energy. Its diverse energy landscape, which includes oil and gas, renewables, and emerging technologies such as geothermal, hydrogen and carbon capture and sequestration, oXers a comprehensive learning experience that prepares students for various career paths within the energy sector. Thanks to the city’s energy ecosystem, students can connect directly with industry professionals, opening doors for internships, job placements, and collaborations to enhance their learning and career prospects. Pursuing a Master’s in Energy Transition and Sustainability in Houston can provide access to these diverse career paths. Students studying in this dynamic environment can contribute to global energy challenges and solutions and impact the world’s energy future.

Energy Transition and Sustainability does not currently offer an academic program at the undergraduate level.
